Ocean Acidification and Global Warming

About 30% of man-made carbon dioxide is absorbed by the oceans which directly correlates with ocean acidification which is the decrease in pH levels. Carbon dioxide released and absorbed is due to burning coal, oil, and gas. This change impacts marine life due to the fact they have evolved over millions of years while the change in global warming is affecting the oceans in a matter of decades.

Climate Change and Displacement

With its rising effects, climate change has become a key factor behind the displacement of people around the world. This would ultimately lead to the creation of the climate refugee - a person who is directly affected by climate-backed natural disasters, and therefore must leave their home temporarily and in other cases permanently. Currently, more people have been displaced on the grounds of climate change than armed conflicts and persecution. The areas most affected by climate change and displacement are developing countries which have contributed less than one percent of all global emissions, suffering almost all weather and climate related casualties. This topic is under the UNHCR’s Model UN Refugee Challenge. In this committee, delegates are tasked with passing valid and realistic resolutions to combat climate change to prevent further displacements and aid those who have been displaced. The resolutions submitted will be reviewed by members of the UNHCR for consideration by policymakers.
